Solo: A Star Wars Story Deleted Scene Features a Callback to 1977 Original

The best thing about a big movie like Solo coming out on digital download and Blu-ray are the extras. Yes, seeing the film again is the main point, but it’s all the behind-the-scenes footage, deleted scenes, director commentary and gag reels that give the movie lover the most bang for their buck. With Solo: A Star Wars Story coming home this month, you can expect a whole lot of juicy extras to enjoy. Ron Howard‘s Solo gave us a whiz-bang story that captured Han becoming Han, as well as his fateful introductions to lifelong best friend Chewbacca and lifelong frenemy Lando Calrissian. Now Entertainment Weekly has it that one of the deleted scenes in the film features a callback to the A New Hope, the 1977 original that started it all.

In that film, there’s a famous scene in which Han and Luke go undercover as stormtroopers to break into the Death Star and rescue Princess Leia. In one of the funniest exchanges in the entire franchise, Han bickers with some suspicious stormtroopers over the intercom, claiming that there’s a reactor leak and there’s no need for them to send a squad up. Han yells “Negative! Negative! We had a reactor leak here. Give us a few minutes to lock it down. It’s a large leak … Very dangerous.” When the officer demands Han’s operating number, Han shoots the intercom.

In the new deleted scene you’ll be getting when Solo comes home, Alden Ehrenreich’s young Han has also gone undercover. He’s in a crippled TIE fighter, and he’s refusing to eject despite being ordered to do so by a superior. Instead, Han decides instead to crash land the TIE fighter, and clicks off his headset with the annoying officer shouting at him to stop in the process. It sounds like a nice little callback, a deep cut for fans who would have picked up on the echo from Han’s future. Nice to know he always had it in him to defy orders.

Lucasfilm has shared the details of what you can expect with the Blu-ray:
