Oscars 2018: The Imaginative, Thoughtful, and Timely Nominated Films

The Oscar nominations were announced this morning, and it’s an electrifying list. The breadth and depth of stories this year was stunning, and the talent on and off screen gets better every year. As it did at the Golden Globes, The Shape of Water leads the nominations with a total of 13. Black Panther cinematographer, Rachel Morrison, became the first female nominated for Cinematography for her work on the powerful Mudbound. Get Out received the rare Best Picture nomination for a horror film. It also scooped up a nod for Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. The only horror film to ever take home the statue was The Silence of the Lambs in 1992. Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird earned her top nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. The only female director to win Best director was Kathryn Bigelow for Zero Dark Thirty in 2012, but Gerwig stands a good chance of being number 2.

Here’s the full list of nominees. We’ll be breaking down all the categories as we approach the ceremony on March 4.
