New Avengers: Infinity War Photos Hint at Miraculous Recoveries & an All-Powerful Villain

While we continue to hail Black Panther, what’s supposed to be Marvel’s biggest movie ever is just starting to ramp up its promotion period, and the photos we’re seeing are intriguing, to say the least. If you think it’s hard to turn your attention from Ryan Coogler’s masterclass in superhero storytelling, don’t fret—Black Panther‘s main characters have big parts to play Avengers: Infinity War. This is made clear in new photos in Entertainment Weeklywhich show T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), his brilliant sister Shuri (Letitia Wright), and the Dora Milaje mixing it up with members of the Avengers as they prepare to face off against Thanos (Josh Brolin). The new photos hint at some major recoveries since the events of Civil War, but also a seriously powerful super villain who seems all but unbeatable.

The photos reveal Shuri talking to fellow braniac Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). A recent photo in Total Film showed former frenemies Black Panther and Captain America (Chris Evans) standing side-by-side. Recall their beef in Captain America: Civil War over T’Challa’s belief that the Winter Soldier killed his father, and who’s that standing only a few feet from T’Chall? Winter Soldier (and his new arm!), as well as the Dora Milaje.

About that super villian…we see Thanos literally ripping a moon out of its orbit (he’s going to be a lot to handle). EW shares that planet is actually Titan, Thanos’s own ruined home. Talk about one way to deal with your past.

Some good news is reflected in the new photos. First, there’s Winter Soldier’s new arm (we’re guessing Shuri helped with that), and then there’s War Machine (Don Cheadle), who seems able to walk! Recall that he was paralyzed near the end of Civil War, but with Tony Stark working on his back (perhaps with an assist from Shuri, using some of her vibranium tech?), but here we see War Machine standing upright next Captain America and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson).

For those not as well versed in the MCU (that’s Marvel Cinematic Universe to the uninitiated) Infinity War functions as both Avengers 3 and the the first of a two-part installment that will bring massive changes to some of our favorite characters and will begin a new phase for the MCU. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo shot Infinity War and Avengers 4 (just a working title) back-to-back, with just about every single Marvel character since the first film, 2008’s Iron Man, coming together to face Thanos.

Not all of them are going to make it.

Avengers: Infinity War comes out on April 27.
