Chris Hemsworth Addresses the Uncertain Future of Thor

With Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War on the way this year, it seems like the Marvel Universe will go on forever. Nothing in life is promised, however, and that includes the return of Chris Hemsworth as Thor. As we learned from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, the future is uncertain for many of our favorite superheroes. This is true both from a narrative standpoint and a contractual one, too. Thor: Ragnarok may have been one of the most unexpectedly funny Marvel movies ever, and raked in the ticket sales, but Hemsworth’s contract as the golden-haired god has actually come to an end.

The 4th Avengers  marks the last contracted movie for a slew of our favorites: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, and Jeremy Renner. As the heroes go to war with Marvel’s baddest supervillain yet, it’s possible not all of the characters will survive the wrath of Thanos. Hemsworth, however, just revealed in an interview with IGN that he hopes to come out the other side with his hammer swinging (if he gets a new hammer, that is).

“I’ve just, literally two days ago, finished Avengers 4 and that’s my contract — my preexisting contract is done now, so it’s kind of like, ‘wow, that’s it,'” Hemsworth told IGN. “Two or three films ago I was like, ‘okay, a couple more.’ I was enjoying it but I was like… I felt a little restricted. And after this last experience with Taika, and actually these last two Avengers, I feel like we’ve reinvented the character a number of times — even in these next two, he evolves again, and you don’t get that opportunity often in a franchise. So I definitely feel a renewed sense of excitement and enthusiasm, and more so than ever, I think.”

The character certainly has come a long way from his brooding inception under director Kenneth Branagh to the charming jokester of Ragnarok under Waititi’s guidance. He even underwent a fresh haircut for his new attitude. Sadly, Hemsworth acknowledged that Thor isn’t everyone’s main focus at the moment, so it might be a while before we get answers. “Right now, it’s about Avengers and it’s about that storyline and those characters,” Hemsworth said. “That’s the focus, in all honesty; I haven’t had conversations about anything else beyond that.”

Another Hemsworth/Waititi collaboration would have our blind support, especially with some more Jeff Goldblum tossed in for good measure. Until then, we’ll enjoy seeing the god of thunder face off against Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War on May 4.
