Thor often uses his hammer to fly (or, at least he did, before Hera came around and ruined everything). Iron Man flies. Vision flies. The Scarlet Witch can levitate. Hulk can jump so high it’s as if he can fly. Of the more Earth-bound Avengers, Captain America not only does a lot of running, jumping, scrambling, and diving—he does it all while schlepping a heavy, huge vibranium shield around. It looks exhausting.
But how exhausting is it? This is the question that the very game creator of Friggin Boom Toys on YouTube wanted to answer for himself, so he went to a parkour obstacle course at a Base Camp in Australia to find out. Yes, his shield is definitely lighter than the one Cap has to haul (also, it’s obviously not made of vibranium, which isn’t a real metal). And yes, what he’s wearing is not as heavy as the armored suit Cap usually dons, but, give the man his due—he is doing a lot of parkour work, carrying a shield, in a silly costume, and none of it is easy.
“Will the weight of the shield be enough to throw my weight distribution off and make me smash my face?” he asks, surprisingly gleefully.
You’ll see in the video below how hard it is to do parkour while also holding a shield. It messes with your balance, especially when you’re jumping off of stuff and don’t have the ability to swing your arms out equally when you land, to keep yourself from pitching over. It also makes simple obstacles like climbing a rope or climbing up a wooden wall much harder. Things get even more interesting when he acknowledges that Cap does all of this running and jumping around while fighting enemies, so he has a friend hurl a 6 kilogram medicine ball at him while he jumps off a trampoline. And when it comes to throwing and catching the shield, something Cap makes look easy in the films, well, you’ll just have to see for yourself how that goes.
The next chance you’ll get to see Captain America in action will be on May 4, 2018, when Avengers: Infinity War premieres.
