Listen up all you members of the Midnight Society. Mark your calendars. There has been a long hiatus, but the next club meeting will be held on October 11, 2019. That should give you plenty of time to work up your best scary story.
The grand nostalgia tour of all your favorite things from being a kid continues with the big screen reboot of Are You Afraid of the Dark. The scariest Nickelodeon show of the 90s, that admittedly still gives us nightmares, is being adapted into a major motion picture and Paramount just announced the release date. The show ran for seven seasons from 1990-2000 and was must see TV on Saturday nights.
The original series that aired on Nickelodeon’s teen targeted programming SNICK was an anthology of ghost stories and urban legends told by a recurring cast of high schoolers who called themselves the Midnight Society. Fan fervor for stories involving teenagers battling supernatural evil in the late 20th century has reached a peak with the success of Stranger Things and IT. Some of the stories dealt with Twilight Zone style scenarios like getting stuck inside a doll house. Others had straight up movie monsters like vampires and murderous clowns.
Are You Afraid of the Dark may ultimately draw similarities to the Stephen King adaptation as IT screenwriter Gary Dauberman will be penning the script. The youth centered horror genre is definitely not fading soon. Netflix announced this week that Stranger Things will be returning for a third season. IT chapter 2, in which the Losers Club battles Pennywise as adults, will be released just before Are You Afraid of the Dark on September 6, 2019.
